The Peranakans, also commonly known as Straits Chinese, are unique to mostly Singapore and Malaysia. They are a combination of cultures, fused together to produce a truly unique and intriguing aesthetic. Peranakan style is known for its geometric designs, colourful features and gilt elements.
The Kebaya wore by peranakan nyonya are often colourful and rich in beautiful embroidery. Motiffs like flowers, butterflies, Phoenix are popular and symbolic. The gentlemen (often referred to as Babas) favour batik shirts similarly rich in motifs.
My family and I really love the colourful and rich Peranakans culture, so to celebrate my boy turning 4, we dressed up and had some family picture!
My father’s batik shirt was hand-sew by myself.
The ladies kebabs are bought at this little shop at Arab street. They have a fantastic range of product! Check out this article for places you could shop at for Kebayas.
