While it’s easy to snap a quick selfie with your loved ones, there’s something special about a professional family photo. It captures a moment in time that can never be repeated. That’s why visiting a photo studio in Singapore can be a valuable experience for you and your family, whether it’s to update your family portrait or celebrate milestones with a graduation photoshoot. This is an opportunity to create a lasting keepsake that you will treasure for a lifetime. At Oh Dear Studio, you can feel at ease in a relaxed and comfortable setting in our colonial space. With a variety of natural light settings to choose from, we’ll work with you to capture your family’s unique personality and bring out each person’s best features in the photos.
After the photoshoot, we will use post-processing software such as Photoshop and Lightroom to edit the image. We might retouch the photo to correct minor imperfections, such as stray hairs or blemishes. Or adjust the contrast, hue, shadows and lighting to bring out the warmth of each image.
Regardless of how the shot is taken, you may be tempted to rely on Photoshop to help you achieve the look you want. However, it’s important to remember that it’s just a tool – and like any tool, it should be used in moderation. Here are some examples of when the use of Photoshop is not suitable for your family photos:
When makeup is not applied
For starters, many people think that they can simply rely on editing to make them look good in photos, but this is not always the case. If you are going to be doing a photoshoot, it is always best to put on some makeup before the shoot. A little bit of foundation, concealer, mascara, and lipstick can go a long way towards making you look camera-ready. This may seem like an extra step, but it can make a big difference in the final photos. At the same time, it will give you an extra boost of confidence, which will come through in your photos.
While the 5R soft copies of your photos are all professionally colour-corrected with signature warm-toning, doing your makeup can give you the assurance that you look presentable in any photo taken. With your makeup done, we’re certain you will look and feel your best on the day of your photoshoot.
When it changes your appearance completely
While a little bit of retouching can help to create a more polished look, we advise against overdoing it. A mother, for example, requested some fine art prints of her ten-year-old daughter. While she wanted the pictures to be perfect – including slimming the face and making the eyes look bigger –, our team recommended that Photoshop should not be used excessively. After all, the best photos are the ones that show your child just as they are.
When your child’s photos are edited right down to the smallest detail, it can give them the impression that they need to look a certain way in order to be considered attractive, which can be damaging to their self-esteem in the long run. It may also be confusing for young children, who may not understand why the person in the photo doesn’t look like them. Additionally, heavily edited images can lose their sentimental value and make it hard for you to look back on your child’s childhood.
With this in mind, we also had a lady who booked a session for a glamour photoshoot to celebrate her 40th birthday. However, she wanted her photos to be air-brushed with all blemishes removed. Yet, there is a point at which too much use can begin to damage the overall quality of the image. Overusing Photoshop can give your pictures an artificial or unnatural look. Remember that photographs are to preserve a certain moment, a certain you or your loved one at that moment. Ultimately, each wrinkle, laugh line or even stretch mark tells a story. Each is a great reminder of your life, whether laughter or tears.
