One of the question we get asked a-lot for Newborn Portrait is that do we provide props.
I am often unsure how to reply, because what kind of props are we talking about? Teddy bears? Flowers? Costumes?
No, we do not provide props nor do we photograph with props and here’s why.
Consider me unconventional, but I believe that more relaxed family portraits featuring your newborn are timeless. Some of the poses commonly associated with newborn photography are artificial— (Newborn babies with hands tuck under their cheeks and entire torso propped up?) Babies don’t naturally assume such positions.
They often necessitate digital manipulation to achieve, and let’s face it, in a few years, we’ll likely cringe at the sight of them, much like we do with babies stuffed in flowerpots or dressed up as.. bee?
When you come to our studio, we focus on getting more lifestyle shots of you holding your baby, and more relaxed photos of your baby rather than unrealistic poses that take hours of moulding, feeding and rocking to get them into!
You are going to look back so fondly at the portraits of how tiny they were in your arm, their precious tiny weeny feet. That interaction and bonding you shared while nursing your baby.
I was once very into fancy props with my firstborn and had her photographed in a crochet worm beanie, mermaid tail and what’s not and guess what…. she’s 11 this year and I’m already finding the photos… quite cridgey.
Guess you can say we’ve undergone a significant shift in perspective. We now firmly advocate for babies to be cradled in your arms, rather than manipulated into lying on guitars or dressed up as an astronaut.
So to answer the question? No, we do not provide “newborn props“, you are the best “prop”.
