Whether you’re a newly engaged couple or about to celebrate your 50th wedding anniversary, a couple photoshoot is a perfect way to capture lasting memories with your significant other. Any age is a good age for couple photography, and you’re never too old to celebrate your love and adoration for each other.
There are many occasions for couple photoshoots, including graduation, engagement, pre-wedding and wedding anniversaries. Or maybe you don’t need any occasion at all – it’s always a good time to make memories with your other half! Couple photoshoots also make a wonderful surprise gift if you’re stumped and need some inspiration.
Here are my top five tips for you if you’re planning to have a couple photoshoot:
1. Consider the Style of Photos That You’re Going for
The first thing to consider is the objective of your couple photoshoot – is it a casual shoot or are you celebrating a specific occasion, such as wedding anniversaries or graduation?
You’ll also want to ask yourself what you’re looking for in your photos and how you envision them to turn out.
2. Decide on a shoot location
Once you’ve decided on the concept of your photoshoot, you will want to decide on a shoot location. Would you prefer to have your photos taken indoors, or outdoors? Are you an adventurous couple with a thing for nature and the outdoors…
… or a stay-home couple with a preference for cosy, intimate indoor shoots?
Whatever it is, keep in mind that there is no location that’s “better” than the other, and this shoot is ultimately all about you and your partner. The perfect shoot location will be one that allows you to feel at ease and in your element.
If you’re in two minds about whether to go for an indoor or outdoor shoot, no worries – we can take a walk around the neighbourhood to have outdoor pictures during your studio session (all-inclusive!). Oh Dear Studio is nestled within a charming heritage neighbourhood with rows of conservation Peranakan shophouses that make for gorgeous pictures like these:
3. Plan Your Outfits
It’s always a good idea to plan your outfits before any photoshoot. Opt for something that makes you feel good and confident – you don’t want to end up looking stiff and unnatural in front of the camera because you feel unsure about your outfit.
You may also want to coordinate outfits with your partner. There’s no need to wear matching outfits, but you can opt for complementary colours or decide on a colour theme, like what this lovely couple did for their 40th wedding anniversary photoshoot:
You will also want to avoid loud patterns and clashing colours and prints.
4. Don’t Practise Poses
Preparing for a photoshoot can be a nerve-racking experience, and it’s completely alright to do some research and come prepared with poses. However, please don’t get carried away and try to strike “perfect” poses during the photoshoot. After all, perfection is often captured in the form of intimate, unposed moments that arise naturally between you and your partner, like these:
5. Be Yourselves
My final and perhaps the most important tip of all is to have fun and be yourself. Yes, it’s that simple! The photoshoot is all about celebrating you and your partner, so remember to relax and have fun during the session.
Enjoy each others’ company and bask in the fuzzy warmth of love (you can bring your pets along too if you like)!
