A regular client texted me recently to tell me she just had her 3rd baby. While she would have loved to have her new baby portraits taken as soon as possible, she found that she could not handle another outdoor shoot at the Botanical Gardens (specially with three kids in tow!)
Hence, she was over the moon when I informed her that I now owned a natural light studio, and she would be able to take her latest portrait in comfortable, indoor air-conditioned surroundings.
Sometime ago, it hit me that while many people would love to take pictures in natural light, some may not relish the idea of braving the outdoors; especially in a hot, humid locale with relatively unpredictable weather.
This made a very strong case for me to find a studio with great natural light.
Outdoor vs Studio shoots
Natural light generally refers to any light created by sunlight. It is known that natural light looks good on clients; as it is organic, comes across as “less artificial” and has an airy quality that generally appeals to most clients.
While natural light is abundant, such shoots are usually held outdoors and with that, comes some shortcomings. The availability of sunlight pretty much depends on the weather, time of the day, and outdoor shoots can be taxing especially on some family members. Other factors that can interrupt an outdoor shoot, and kill the general mood include the presence of passers-by, bugs or even undue attention from an unwanted audience.
Studio shoots on the other hand are held indoors (with air-con, changing room, wash room and resting areas) and are more convenient as they can be done at night as well. Using artificial lights, such shoots provide more versatility to a professional photographer. With full control of the lighting, the unpredictability of natural light is negated and it is easier for the photographer to create a particular look or mood.
Studio shoots however, are perceived as slow and static, hence often resulting in stiff-looking expressions and postures.
Why not do both?
Since both methods of shooting are capable of stunning results, why not have the best of both worlds? I would rather have both on hand like tools to be used for different jobs, than restrict myself to just one.
Hence I found that shooting in a natural light studio is the best option possible!
A natural light studio is a great alternative which marries both options into one perfect photography session. Abundant sunlight streams in through tall windows to light up a perfect setting, with artificial, studio lights to complement for depth and texture.
There is air-con, and it is less taxing for the little ones or old folks. There will be a lot less complaints; and the entire family, not to mention the shoot itself, will be less susceptible to the mercies of the weather. Clients will feel more comfortable and this means more relaxed expressions, while still having that soft, creamy natural light on hand to produce truly gorgeous results.
I can also play with colors cast by reflected light by placing a subject close to a colored wall.
Window light is also a great type of light to use in portraiture because I can easily adjust the quality, quantity, and even the color of the light with the right curtains!
In a nutshell
Merging both natural and studio lighting produces much sought-after photos which are bright, candid, clean and happy. In a natural light studio, a good photographer will be able to achieve this and create the best images for you.
