Throughout history, horse has occupied a powerful place in the emotional, spiritual and daily lives of human beings. They appear in our art, myth, religion, poetry, song, philosophy, literature and film; often in a philosophical context.
Pro-tip: Horse photoshoot is only suitable for children who are not afraid of animals larger than them. Recommended for age 7 and above!
Why horse photoshoot?
This Horse Photoshoot Singapore was inspired by my daughter’s love of dragons (How to train your dragon series is her absolute favourite!) But since dragons are slightly out of the question, the closest she could “settle” on are horses! She adores how fierce and strong, yet gentle and beautiful they are.
Mood-board of the horse photoshoot
The entire photoshoot was conceptualise by myself and her. We wanted a classic, simple ‘spring time’ look, yet slightly medieval looking. Earthy, timeless and vintage are also some of the keywords we were basing our ideas on. I sew her a linen dress by myself with square line bodice that is inspired by the medieval-princesses of her book (namely Merida from Brave).
Pro-tips: Avoid colours such a brown/blue/green for outdoor photoshoots. These colours are too similar in range to the surrounding. Opt for white / cream / peach / yellow / red tones to really stand out.
The horse photoshoot experience
The very experience handler of Gallop Stable was with us throughout the shoot and helping us with handling the horse. A pony was chosen for my daughter (to best fit her height). I love that the mare chosen for us was gentle and calm. Here are some tips for the shoot that I hope would be useful to you!
Some tips from us for Horse Portraits Photoshoot:
#1 Wear covered shoes. Boots being the best!
Being an outdoor shoot that is mostly at the meadow, the grass can get rather prickly and tall. Wear covered shoes that protects your feet not only from accidental horse-trod, but from any grass or bugs too! Not to mention it is much easier walking in flat covered shoes/boots than heels.
#2 Choosing the golden hour
Choosing the correct timing is crucial as this is a unsheltered outdoor photoshoot. The golden hour is typically 8am – 9am in the morning or 6PM – 7PM in the evening. Lightings and shadows are soft and perfect for outdoor photography.
#3 Remain calm and gentle. Refrain from shouting or yelling
Respect and safety goes a long way. When spooked, upset, or frustrated, horses can bite, kick, or trample. Always listen to the Handler as she would know best.
Horses are gentle and beautiful creatures that has fascinated humans throughout the history. My daughter was simply over the moon at having the opportunity to be so up-close and personal with one, and beautiful photographs to keep no less! After the horse photoshoot, we walked around the stables for a bit and had some fine-art style portraits taken. What do you think? Would you like a horse photoshoot for yourself in sunny Singapore?
