Having been in the photography industry for over ten years, I’ve had a fair share of clients approach me for glamour photography. What exactly is glamour photography? To put it simply, it is a genre of photography that celebrates ladies. What makes glamour shots so unique is that it focuses primarily on emphasising the subject’s beauty, and may involve utilising specific techniques to highlight the subject’s best features. Some ladies may request to have artistic nude shots taken as well. Ultimately, it is a form of art that serves to celebrate a lady’s confidence and love for herself.

There are many reasons why ladies want to have a glamour photoshoot. Some ladies wish to feel more comfortable in their own skin, while others may see it as a brilliant opportunity to celebrate their birthdays or an upcoming wedding.
Challenges I Faced When Doing Glamour Photography
One of the biggest challenges I faced during glamour photoshoots was figuring out how to direct the shoot. After all, directing a lady differs significantly from shooting a two-year-old toddler – I cannot be using the same type of language and instructing the subject to have the same body posture as I would have done for a young child.

Eventually, I learned that body posture is the key to creating the desired mood of any photography. For example, eye contact (or the lack thereof) and a subtle tilt of the head can make a shot turn out differently.
We will guide you on your body posture to create the desired effect for your photos.

There were also instances where the client felt insecure about her physical appearance but still wished to celebrate herself with a glamour shoot. One of the most memorable glamour photoshoots that I had was with a client who got a tattoo on her legs to celebrate her 50th birthday. She wanted to have the tattoo captured but felt very insecure about how “big” her legs appear on camera. With the help of correct posture and lighting, we eventually achieved her desired look.
Lighting could also be an issue at times. Usually, natural lighting is my preferred type of lighting for glamour photography as it creates timeless and flattering shots. However, on rainy or gloomy days, the mood of the pictures can change drastically.
At Oh Dear Studio, we use a combination of natural and studio lighting to create timeless shots.

My Top Glamour Photography Tips
Going for a glamour photoshoot can seem daunting at first, but I promise you that it will all be worth it! Here are some of my top glamour photography tips to help you prepare for your session:
- Keep jewellery to a minimum. During a glamour photoshoot, the focus should be on you. So, dramatic jewellery can be distractions.

- As much as possible, stick to solid-coloured outfits. Similarly, loud patterns and prints can be distracting and take the focus off you.

- Make sure that you are wearing an outfit that fits you perfectly and reflects your personality. If the outfit doesn’t fit you properly or makes you feel uncomfortable or self-conscious, it may be challenging to achieve the desired effect for your photos.
