With the year-end season coming up, most of us will be seeking ways to celebrate, and there is no better way than to gather your family for an extended Multi-Generation photoshoot! Read on for more tips and hacks for organising a professional photoshoot that will please the older folks as well as create a great bonding session with the young ones!
(Do note: due to the current situation, we can only accept a maximum of 10pax for shoots. Masks are mandatory)
1. Book early for your preferred slot!
With more people, it gets more difficult to coordinate a suitable timing for everybody. So once you have decided, book earlier to avoid disappointment. Peak periods for local studios occur typically during year-end festivities (Christmas!) as well as January-February periods (Chinese New Year!). Weekends tend to be very popular as well, so do try to book at least two months in advance!
2. Timing Timing Timing!
Apart from tip #1, the timing of the shoot is equally important! If you have young toddlers or babies with established routines, do avoid scheduling your shoot during their nap time. This usually results in cranky, over-tired children. The best timing to start your shoot is usually in the morning at around 9am or 10am, when everybody is fresh and alert! The afternoon around 3 or 4PM is perfect as well (followed by an early family dinner after the shoot!) One important note, to ensure a smooth session, you do not want your photographer to feel stress or rush for time so do arrive on time (or ten mins earlier)!
3. Coordinating your outfits
Right, so you have booked the perfect date and timing. What’s next? Why, outfits! Coordinating your outfits with everybody is no mean feat, but your efforts will pay off! Generally white/light colours work best for photography. Smart casual, light linen or summery cotton dresses will look really great. Depending on your preferences, formal will look awesome as well. Shoes are optional but do bring them along for more photo-taking angles!

4. Communicate with your photographer
Perhaps you have a specific image in mind, or a family member has a particular request. Or maybe you would like more photographs of Grandma because it’s her Birthday? Pre-empt your photographer and let her know. Discuss with her the different settings or outfits you have in mind. Being on the same page with your photographer helps a lot in bringing your ideas or visuals to life!
5. Relax and have fun!
During your shoot day, do try to arrive 10 – 15mins earlier to prepare yourself, as well as to familiarise young children with the studio. I find pre-empting young children (the day or night before) helps with expectations. Relax and enjoy your shoot! Have a read here on Melody’s tips on how to manage a toddler during photoshoots!
6. Choosing your large display
After all the effort in gathering your kampong, it’s only right to choose a main portrait from the many gorgeous images you have, to display at home! Our session is inclusive of both formal studio settings as well as natural light settings in our stylish colonial shophouse (have a look here at the many different settings our studio offers), that can result in natural and heartfelt photographs you will be proud to gift your parents, or display at your own home. Just choose your pictures and let us know whether frames, canvas or even a photo album works for you. After that, just sit back and let us do all the work.
