Read on to find out our top tips for a perfect One Year old Birthday Smash Cake shoot!
We have all seen those perfect Pinterest first year birthday photoshoot, cherubs smiling with sparkly eyes and in gorgeous baby outfit. It’s all the rage now to celebrate your Baby’s First birthday with a cake smash session. Read on to find out our top tips on how to coordinate and arrange that memorable first year birthday photoshoot!
1 . Timing and scheduling
Coordinate with your photographer and schedule the shoot on a time where your baby is most active. Try to avoid the timing before her nap time (or yike! Exactly during her nap time!). Typically we find the morning timing of 8 to 11am the best for photographing babies and toddlers.
2 . Plan your Outfits
Choose outfits for your baby that are fitting (not loose or hanging), neutral colours like white or pale pastel colour work best! Come dressed in the first outfit you want her to be photographed in to minimise too much changing (some babies absolutely dislike changing!) Having her photographed in her Birthday Suit is also a great way to show off those adorable baby rolls!
3. Playing with Baby during shoot
Don’t get frustrated if baby is ‘not smiling’, instead, play with her! Tickle, hug and kiss your cherub! Relax and have fun, your photographer will be able to capture those candid timeless moments! Is your baby a serious little one? A pensive little model? Photographs does not have to be smiling, we want to capture her as how she is!
4. Bring in her favourite plushie
Their blankie, favourite elephant plush toy or pacifier? Bring them in! These not only work as great props, calm your baby down, they would look wonderful in photographs as you look back at them in years to come!
5. Snacks and milk and more snacks!
Being a model is tiring, so remember to pack those extra snacks! Let your baby rest a little in between shooting and outfit changes and she will be all ready for the next big smile and flash!
6. Colour of the cake
Bring in a cake and celebrate baby’s First Year photoshoot in style! Her first bite of cake? Smashing and playing with the cake? All super adorable for picture!! But mind the colour of the cake, chocolate brown cream doesn’t look good on (baby’s) face, nor does a bright red-cream look good all smeared on her (Baby’s) face. Opt for a pale pastel or white cake with minimum decoration. Lighted candles are a big no-no!

Melody is very professional and knowledgeable. Not only does she takes great photos, she makes it fun too.. More importantly, these are the memories that always put a smile to us whenever we look back in time.
I have known Melody since 2013. All the milestones in different stages of my life are captured by her. From a teenager, to a young graduate, married adult and to becoming a fat father, she has always been there, and it’s not the end.
We will always think of her to capture and record the special moments of our lives.
Thank you for all the beautiful photos, and wish that you can help all the lovely people take nice and special photos too.. =) ” – Kelvis Kua, Father of One Year old Baby Sarah
