The kebaya is a versatile and timeless garment worn by women in Southeast Asia. Symbolizing modesty, elegance and cultural identity, the kebaya has been an integral part of life for women for centuries. For the first time ever, Singapore is joining hands with Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand to nominate the beloved kebaya onto the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The five countries aim to submit the nomination documents to UNESCO in March 2023. The results are expected to be announced in end 2024. How exciting??
